SUPPORTIVE DEPARTMENTS
DOMESTIC DEPARTMENT
The
services in this department are supervised by the Nursing Officer in
charge. Staff: 2 tailors, 4 launderers. The department is concerned
with supplies of non-medical supplies like bed sheets, clothes, soap,
theatre linen, mosquito nets etc.
The
hospital does not give food to the patients as there is no fund for
it from government anymore and a lot of food was wasted as most
patients get from their relatives. For those who have no relatives
there is an arrangement with a hospital canteen. Food is supplied to
malnutrition room in children’s ward. Maize, soya, sugar, cooking
oil, milk, eggs and firewood/charcoal is needed. The food is cooked
in the demonstration kitchen outside children’s ward by medical
attendants in cooperation with the mothers of the children.
The
mothers admitted in premature unit get porridge. This has greatly
improved compliance with the advised time to stay in the unit.
Friends of Sengerema Hospital funded the porridge.
Patients
who have no relative get 2 meals per day. Support for food for these
patients and the food for malnutrition unit was provided by Friends
of Sengerema It is supplied by the canteen of the Diocese localized
at the hospital technical yard.
Water
situation in Sengerema improved a lot since the new system of pumps
and pipes came into use the hospital still mostly paid a flat rate
making water affordable for the hospital.
Drinking
water is supplied by the Paula system. It is filtered and lightly
chlorinated water and regularly sent to Mwanza for testing.
New
washing machines have arrived and installed in January 2020.
EVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT
The
department takes care of cleanliness inside and outside the hospital
wards, cleanliness and beautifying the surroundings of the hospital,
staff houses and hostels adjacent to the hospital.
It
also takes care of dead bodies not claimed by relatives,
INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
The
hospital employs an ICT Technician and there is a volunteer assistant
The
hospital has an internet cafe and internet connection in the
executive offices and the eye department. Workers can browse the
internet for studies or follow on line courses for free but pay for
using email. The hospital HMIS office, RCH and BIMA have their own
internet connection as to send data to DHIS2 and BIMA.
The
ICT/HMIS project started in 2008. It came in another phase in 2012 as
part of the out patients department, registration and billing became
computerized the health management information system used is AFYA
PRO. It aims to improve and simplify data collection as well as
financial management. While the billing and registration part is
functioning well, the clinical part: electronic registration of
patient data, possibility to retrieve them, connect with laboratory
and pharmacy for ordering is not yet. We can register clients who
have an exemption and retrieve this data as well as see how many come
from other districts. Actually a lot of clinicians offices have a
computer and connection but the system is not used because it
consumes time and it is difficult to trace stored data. Also
supervision still stresses use manual HMIS books.
Government
now stresses the use of electronic systems. We intend to connect the
pharmacy and consider going to electronic patient files. Also the
Sengerema New Pharmacy needs a connection.
