IN PATIENTS DEPARTMENTS
The
ward doctors are assisted by the Dutch interns (Student Doctors), who
rotate in the wards under their supervision. Specialists who do ward
rounds with students contribute to improved quality of care. There
are 3 specialists: Dr. Harusha a Gynecologist who is employed by
Sengerema Hospital/Diocese of Geita, Dr. Rwezaura a Pediatrician and
Dr. Gunda a Physician employed by CUHAS. While the main task of the
latter is teaching the medical students from CUHAS they contribute to
care in the wards by consultations and during teaching ward rounds.
Specialist surgeons come for teaching but are minimally involved in
the patient care. Some times their residents come instead of the
specialists.
Nursing
staff in the wards are still not enough, A stable system was
developed for night duties with retired and young nurses and few
others working mostly on call schedule. They are paid for the nights
worked. This system stabilized care at night as well as in day time.
Occupancy
rate went up to 81% from 75.
